The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth. It is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way, but not the nearest galaxy overall. It gets its name from the area of the sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda, which was named after the mythological princess Andromeda. The Andromeda Galaxy is one of a few galaxies that can be seen unaided from the Earth. The Andromeda Galaxy is approaching the Milky Way at approximately 100 to 140 kilometres per second. In approximately 4.5 billion years the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way are expected to collide and the result will be a giant elliptical galaxy. The mythological Greek Princess Andromeda!
